Profile  ·  Colombo  ·  MMXVIII – MMXXVI

Senior UI/UX Engineer, and the system’s owner.

Experience

  1. Apr 2022 – Present

    Colombo

    Senior UI/UX Engineer  ·  Zone24x7 (Pvt) Ltd

    • Design system ownership. Owned three systems end to end from scratch (a precision agriculture app, a biometric photo-ID suite and a freight logistics cockpit), building every component, screen and prototype. Extended six more across banking, manufacturing, mining-site tooling, biometric identity and warehouse management, and contributed to an RFID inventory tracking system.
    • Product and UI/UX leadership. Line-managed three designers over the period, one at a time, and guided eight product teams through the full design-to-implementation lifecycle: UX direction during the requirements phase, sole ownership of the Figma source of truth, and hands-on support for developers through the build.
    • AI-augmented practice. Removed the dependency on dedicated frontend support by implementing design changes directly, and moved direction-setting earlier, wireframing and testing before committing to production. Currently via Cursor, Claude, Visily.ai, Builder.ai and Figma AI.
    • Design-to-development alignment. Specified each system for its target stack, from Flutter-ready components on the ag-tech app to React with Ant Design, Kendo UI and Material UI elsewhere, then implemented the styling directly. The work was measured on minimising rework and UI defects across every project touched.
    • Accessibility. Embedded WCAG colour-contrast and content-sizing standards into the ag-tech, photo-ID and banking systems from the first token, and ran a dedicated accessibility research pass for a consumer delivery platform.
    • Documentation. Wrote self-contained style guides inside the Figma files for ten products, covering component usage, tokens, spacing, type scale, colour and interaction patterns. New developers onboard from the design file itself.
  2. Sep 2018 – Apr 2022

    Colombo

UI Engineer  ·  Zone24x7 (Pvt) Ltd

    • Designed web, mobile and native product UI across ten products spanning warehouse robotics, cross-border e-commerce, retail logistics and emergency distribution.
    • Built mock-ups and production UI for a Fortune 500 retailer's shopping-intent detection system: traffic analytics, anomaly monitoring, loss prevention, store picker and configuration modules, alongside wayfinding map assets sliced into tiles for zoom levels 17 to 22.
    • Held the in-house design function across four departments before moving into product, more than a hundred marketing designs in all: brand, marketing, recruitment and event material, and the corporate website. It opened with six months inside the marketing department itself, September 2018 to March 2019, alongside the UI work.
    • That design function, itemised. Business Design Office: social campaigns and milestone flyers, the corporate slide deck, brochures for every service, product specifications and range documentation, plus the vector artwork and the case-study series for the corporate website. Human Resources: Slasscom Women's Day and the Slasscom cricket tournament, the Colombo Flutter meetup, employee awards and service milestones, recruitment adverts and the university engagement programme. Systems: the internal awareness campaign, from access-card redesigns to blood-donation drives. Alongside those, company sports and charity events and internal knowledge-sharing sessions on Flutter, Docker and Kubernetes, GDPR and C4 models.
    • Robotic warehouse fulfilment system. Built the ROI interface, redesigned the device tiles and replaced the tabbed configuration-review flow with a single-page view, alongside scheduling configuration and a run of UI fixes across the troubleshooter, the management portal and the configuration pages.
    • The progression. Joined in September 2018 as Trainee Associate UI Engineer, became Associate UI Engineer in March 2019 and UI Engineer that September, before the move to Senior UI/UX Engineer in April 2022.
  3. Jan 2020 – Present

    remote

    Freelance Designer  ·  Sodafresh

    • Brand and print design (marketing collateral, product catalogues, warranty documentation, outdoor banners and user manuals) on a rolling freelance basis since January 2020 and running alongside the full-time role throughout.

Earlier projects

  1. Patient Management System

    • A stand-alone application for patient records management at the hospital, built for the BSc in Information Systems at UCSC.
    • Designed interfaces that stayed easy to navigate while remaining visually pleasing, and implemented part of the application's core business logic in Java.
  2. Project Scheduling and Staff Allocation

    • Designed the flow and the interfaces of the scheduling and allocation system.
  3. Nutri Plus

    • A mobile application giving people the nutritional values of foods and recipes.
    • Built a stronger user experience by designing interfaces that stayed simple while remaining appealing.

Teaching and mentoring

Six years of it, mostly unpaid and mostly on weekends: mentorship cycles, undergraduate workshops, judging panels and the odd Adobe XD session. The habit of explaining the work is what turned into owning the system. The photographs are on the off-hours page.
